The family of a girl who was left with severe brain damage as a result of mistakes made by medical staff during her birth has been awarded around £6.6 million in compensation, reports the Daily Mail.

Ruby Curtis, who is now eight, was left with cerebral palsy as a result of being starved of oxygen during labour and birth.

Staff at St James Hospital in Leeds allegedly failed to notice that Lisa Curtis’s uterus had ruptured during labour and didn’t act quickly enough to deliver Ruby. As a result Ruby’s brain was starved of oxygen and she was left with cerebral palsy that affects her motor skills and means she is reliant on 24-hour care.

The compensation includes a lump sum of £2.95million plus annual payments to help meet the cost of her care. The hospital admitted majority responsibility, reports the Daily Mail, and has apologised formally to the family for the mistakes made.
