Irish Supreme Court rules in land access dispute

A high profile Irish property dispute hit the headlines this week, when the Irish Supreme Court ruled on land access rights and public rights of way relating to Lissadell House, a historically important country house in County Sligo.

According to the BBC, the case dates back to 2008 when Sligo County Council granted four rights of access through the grounds of the Lissadell estate. The house had been extensively renovated by its owners, and was open to the public.

This decision led to the owners closing the house in 2009, claiming that uncontrolled public access made it impossible to keep it open because of insurance, security and maintenance concerns.

The case has been one of the biggest in Irish history in terms of cost and duration, reports the BBC, and before it reached the Supreme Court it spent 58 days in the High Court, where a judgment was reached in favour of the Council.

However, the Supreme Court has now overturned this ruling, and found that there are no public rights of way through the estate, except for limited access rights to a certain section of coast.
