Ruling in 21-year inheritance dispute

In an interesting example of inheritance disputes abroad, a bitter court battle over an Indian estate worth an estimated £2.5 billion took a step towards closure earlier this month.

According to the Telegraph. the late Maharaja of Faridkot, Sir Harinder Singh Brar, died in 1989 at the age of 74. His family had expected to inherit his fortune, but their expectations were thwarted after a will turned up, instructing that his estate should be left to a trust benefiting his staff instead.

His three remaining children, all daughters, challenged the will and the resulting dispute lasted for 21 years. However, a magistrate has now finally ruled that the will was forgery.

According to the Telegraph, one of the daughters died during the dispute, and the estate will therefore be shared out between the two remaining children, both of whom are now in their 70s.

According to the Times of India, the Trust is planning to appeal the ruling.
